In case you have absolute no idea what I am referring to...
The Michael L. Printz Award annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit, each year. In addition, the Printz Committee names up to four honor books, which also represent the best writing in young adult literature (ALA).
This year is going to be different. Instead of plowing aimlessly through my (still) ridiculous stack of unread books, I've decided to challenge myself.
Inspired by a small twist of fate (A very special author event) and my love for a certain Australian writer (No, not you Sarah. Although I love you very much), I decided I would take this year to read every Printz Award winning book. Lucky for my schedule, there are only 12 books on the list which is completely doable. Here they are...
2012: Where Things Come back by John Corey Whaley
2011: Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi
2010: Going Bovine by Libba Bray
2008: The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean
2006: Looking for Alaska by John Green
2005: How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
2004: The First Part Last by Angela Johnson
2003: Postcards from No Man's Land by Aidan Chambers
2002: A Step From Heaven by An Na
2001: Kit's Wilderness by David Almond
*takes deep breath*
I've given myself until December 31st to read them all. I've already read On The Jellicoe Road and Where Things Come Back so, if my mathematical calculations are correct, I only have 10 more books to go. Not so bad, right?
God speed.

Hmmm... how does someone decide a book's 'literary merit'? Hmmmm? I is curious. Mehehe. Also: I'm going to convince myself you meant me anyway :P
ReplyDeleteOooh, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaimain won a Newberry? READ THAT! :D
Err... OK! I actually just bought Looking For Alaska, like, a week ago? Shall we read it together? Along with the other John Green we spoke about reading and still haven't? :D
Uh...I dunno. A panel of highly qualified Literary merit evaluators? Eeep! *runs away*
Deletelol...you know I have the graveyard book. After you told me to read it. I NEED MORE TIME, SARAH!!! MORE TIMESS!!!
YESSS!!!! John Green Marathon perhaps?? We shall be happily depressed for the coming weeks :D
HAPPILY DEPRESSED! YES! Then maybe we can have a wake for all the characters he inevitably kills off. With chocolate. And cake.
DeleteKristin, this is a great challenge! I'm a fan of Libba Bray but I didn't think Going Bovine would be a good book. Hope to find out what you think about that and Looking for Alaska. All of them, really!
ReplyDeleteGood luck! :)
Thanks Kathe! I am really nervous/excited about this challenge! I think I can do it. I just need to squeeze em in with all my other books!
DeleteI have actually heard really great things about Going Bovine. It's been sitting on my shelf for a LONG WHILE now and I may just pick it up next.
I also hear really great things about John Green! Can't wait to share the reviews with you guys!! :D
