The Piper's Son

Synopsis (Goodreads)Award-winning author Melina Marchetta reopens the story of the group of friends from her acclaimed novel Saving Francesca - but five years have passed, and now it’s Thomas Mackee who needs saving. After his favorite uncle was blown to bits on his way to work in a foreign city, Tom watched his family implode. He quit school and turned his back on his music and everyone that mattered, including the girl he can’t forget. Shooting for oblivion, he’s hit rock bottom, forced to live with his single, pregnant aunt, work at the Union pub with his former friends, and reckon with his grieving, alcoholic father. Tom’s in no shape to mend what’s broken. But what if no one else is either? An unflinching look at family, forgiveness, and the fierce inner workings of love and friendship, The Piper’s Son redefines what it means to go home again.

-----

I've been thinking...

I should probably change the name of my blog to: The Official Melina Marchetta Fan-Girl SQUEE Site.

No?

Well, it's either that or GrowingUp Marchetta

Hmm...I like the sound of that *grins*

Seriously though, Melina Marchetta has easily become my FAVORITE author (If you couldn't already tell). And The Piper's Son? Let's put it this way, I was making plans to re-read it long before I was even finished.

But on to my review, which I promise won't get too crazy with fan-girl squee...

Maybe.

The Piper's Son takes place five years after Saving Francesca. The tables have turned and the novel's hero is now a 21-year-old Thomas Mackee. His world has turned upside-down and if you thought he was a hot-mess before...well, you just wait!

Now I don't know how Marchetta does it, but she has this way of making you feel for these characters. They're not just paper and ink! These characters come alive and you yearn for them. Your heart breaks for them. And once their stories have been told, it becomes incredibly difficult to let go.

I'll warn you, Tom Mackee was my real love going into this novel. I lusted over his eccentric swag in Saving Francesca and I was thrilled to finally get a glimpse at the inner workings of a complicated mind. What I never expected, however, was to fall in love with Tom's aunt, Georgie, who managed to pull me through the novel.

But why Georgie??

Well, I think it had everything to do with seeing her vulnerability as an adult. I tend to forget that adults are, in fact, normal human beings who can easily muck things up sometimes. Yes, they make mistakes and no, they don't always have all the answers. Georgie's story was full of those moments. Wonderful moments that made you reflect on your own experiences and familial relationships.

Don't get me wrong, Tom Mackee will always be my boo (behind Jonah Griggs, of course) but there was this magnetic attraction to Georgie that made her stand out and stick with me.

You know what else I loved about this book, and what makes Marchetta's novels so remarkable? The woman makes you work! She'll be there to set up the pieces, but it's up to you to put them together. And how she manages to successfully combine an honest narrative with touches of irresistible humor still boggles my mind. She's brilliant!

I never in a million years would have thought that I'd end up loving contemporary novels as much as I do. Yet, here I am, completely devoted to Marchetta's written word. The woman manages to grab me with honest and raw emotion, and I can't help but be inspired by it.

The Piper's Son is a lot of things, but most importantly, it's a story about life, second chances and that little spark of hope that remains long after the world has left you in the dark.

And to you, Melina Marchetta, I thank you.
From the bottom of my book-loving heart.
Your words have never failed to inspire
and for that I am eternally grateful.

Nothing's Right I'm TORN

Synopsis (Goodreads)Torn - the second book of the Trylle Trilogy...

Wendy thought she finally understood who she was and what she wanted, but everything changes when the rival Vittra come after her.

She's caught between two worlds, torn between love and duty, and she must decide what life she is meant to lead.

-----

First, let me start by saying that what you read above is probably the shortest synopsis in the history of the universe. Fact!

But we're moving on because I know why you're here...you're here to talk about Amanda Hocking's second book in the Trylle TrilogyTorn.

Now, I didn't think it was possible to enjoy a sequel as much, if not more, than the first book in the series, but I definitely did. And you wanna know why?? Well, their names are Finn, Loki and Tove.

And I love them.

And true love lasts a lifetime...

Seriously, I've never met a more unique set of fictional guys! They had such distinct voices and personalities! Not to mention they brought an interesting dynamic to not only the story but to the life of Wendy, the novel's protag.

I tried to contain my swoon and FAILED. Horribly.

Like I said in my review of Switched, Hocking brings a refreshingly new series to the table! You never know what's coming next and the woman doesn't disappoint. She'll keep you on your toes the ENTIRE. TIME.
I will say that there are two things definitely stood out for me. The first was seeing the Vittra in action. YES! YES! YES! We're finally (formally) introduced to the "bad guys" and other key characters in the game. And, well...just know that there's a lot of crazy stuff going down in the world of the Trylle!!

The second impressive bit was Wendy's growth.  She really comes into her own in this book as she begins to understand the importance of her title and the responsibilities that come with it.  It was never an overnight epiphany, but a gradual, very subtle transformation and I LOVED that!

I'll warn you now, though.  Once you finish Torn, you'll want to have Ascend on deck! There is NO way you'll finish it without wanting to find out what's next. And trust me, it's goooooood.

Follow Fridays (4)

This week's featured Blogger is Book'd Out whose question is...

What book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

Hm...that's an interesting question.

I'll go ahead and say that I am not a fan of Autobiographies. Especially celebrity autobiographies. You know what? I'll take it a step further and say tween/teen celebrity autobiographies.

Ugh, come on! When a 15-year-old is getting paid an obscene amount of money to "write" the story of their (uneventful/short) life, a little part of me dies.

So, what book genre do YOU avoid??

Switched

Synopsis (Goodreads): When Wendy Everly was six-years-old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. It isn't until eleven years later that Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. With the help of Finn Holmes, Wendy finds herself in a world she never knew existed - a world both beautiful and frightening, and Wendy's not sure she wants to be a part of it.

-----

I was lucky enough to have purchased Amanda Hocking's Switched while it was still being sold on Amazon for .99 cents. YAY, ME!

Like a good book, it waited patiently on my Kindle.  You know, just waiting for me to read it...

And then that damn book trailer was released!

Sexy, brooding stranger lurking outside my window??

Thank you, Edward Cullen, I AM SO IN!

You know, I keep thinking this whole guy coming through my window thing is cute, but realistically it's actually quite dangerous.  One of these days someone is going to get assaulted!

Take heed, ladies (and gentlemen). You've been warned!

But I digress. Uh...A LOT.

Bless these marketing/publicity folk, but I couldn't wait any longer. I HAD to read this book!!

And thank the heavens I did because I absolutely LOVED Switched! I was hooked from the start and it didn't take long for me to realize what all the Amanda Hocking fuss was about.

I mean she's good.  Real good!

I've seen/read a lot of, er, questionable self-published books in my life, but this was nothing like that! For it to have been Hocking's first novel, the story was very well written, engaging and completely original. The Trylle/Troll mythology was completely new to me and it was incredibly refreshing in a YA world that's over-saturated with the same ol' fantastical creatures...

You know, 'cause vamps and ab-ridden wolves are SO 2011!

And while I feel like I say it all the time, I give props to writers who bring something new to the table! It's really hard to stand out and be different, and Amanda Hocking has definitely earned that praise.

That and she loves John Hughes so we can totally be friends

Hocking's Switched has a little something for everyone.  There's action, adventure, mythology, a love quadrangle and an emo tracker who just won't stop pouting.

It's absolute madness and I wouldn't have enjoyed it any other way.

Who's The DUFF?

Synopsis (Goodreads): Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.
Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

-----

Do you guys remember when I said that Jennifer Echols' Going Too Far was super sexy? Well, hot damn! That book has got nothing on The DUFF by Kody Keplinger.

This novel is chock full o' Girl Power (yes, I am channeling my inner Ginger Spice), cute boys (*drools on keyboard*) and er...well, lots and lots of Sexy-Time (Quick, if not random, shout-out to Borat)

Then again, it's a Kody Keplinger book, people. This is what she does best!

Now, I've never been a fan of protagonists who make all the perfect choices in life. On the contrary,  I live for the ones you tend to yell at because they're making all the wrong ones (Don't give me that look! I know you've been there, too!). And you wanna know why I like those flawed protags? Because, if we're being honest, we're just like them.  We make mistakes and  sooner or later were forced to deal with them.

And that was one of the things I loved about The DUFF.  Keplinger never gave her characters an easy way out, so it was incredibly entertaining to see how the characters progressed and dealt with their issues. Even if it did involve, um...lots and lots of sexy-time.

Now while the story is a bit predictable, it was still a really fun read and I couldn't put it down. The characters were layered, their lives were complicated and yes, the novel's bad-boy, Wesley Rush, was every bit as sexy as you'd imagine.  Even if he was a bit of a man-whore...

You wanna know what's really great about this book, though? The fact that Kody was just 17 when she wrote it! You know what I was doing when I was 17? Uh...not writing books!

Seriously though, I am really excited about Keplinger's career as a novelist. She's proven to be an extremely talented writer, fearlessly tackling even the touchiest of subjects.

Guys, we need more of those in this world...
