Guest Post: Cecilia Gray

Seriously guys, this woman just won't leave me alone!

 :b Just kidding :b

I love Cecilia Gray and today she's bringing us a very special guest post.

Enjoy!!

Told it right the first time? Tell me again!

If you take enough writing classes, you’ll eventually sit through the one where the teacher claims there are only seven types of stories. Or 20. Or 35. It’s like Glamour magazine – sometimes there are 7 minutes to perfect abs and sometimes it takes 8 minutes.

Point is: almost all books, at their hearts, are retellings. (And your abs will never be perfect.)

Not just books are big on retellings – movies and television, too. Pride & Prejudice has a half-dozen incarnations – not that I’m complaining. 80’s sci-fi film Total Recall, itself a screen adaptation of a Philip K. Dick novel, is getting a film reboot this year. Even television series 21 Jumpstreet just hit the big screen with a big dose of tongue-in-cheek and a wink at the audience about the original series’ campiness. One of my favorite shows on television, Revenge, is a Count of Monte Cristo retelling.

Books, television and movies aren’t the only retelling tools. Check out Broadway. One of the most successful musicals of all time, Wicked, is based on the Gregory Maguire retelling of The Wizard of Oz which was a children’s book that already had its fair share of movies, sequels and film spin-offs.

If you poll the average crowd, they might agree that certain books and movies are sacred and should never be redone because they couldn’t possibly be improved – but I think that’s missing the point.

Retellings aren’t necessarily improvements. Retellings are personalizations. To some degree, every time you read a story, you are telling it in your own mind. You’re drawing from your own history when you interpret a character’s actions. You’re simmering on your own issues as you interpret whether a character is sympathetic.

That’s why I fully advocate for the following retellings:

(3) To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Let’s just get the most controversial pick out of the way, shall we? No no, go ahead. Throw a few eggs at me. I’ll wait….

Okay – here’s my pitch: yes, I know. This book is perfect. Nostalgic. Iconic. Wouldn’t then even a piss-poor retelling of To Kill A Mockingbird be better than 99% of other books? Maybe a version that trades racial inequality in the south for another inequity. Maybe a version where Jem is a little older. Maybe a version where I’m married to Gregory Peck…I mean…moving on…

(2) Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

I’m talking specifically about a rewrite that gives Eponine the spotlight she deserves. Spoiler alert: this spoiled daughter of two villains pines for her beloved as he chooses her pure-as-the-driven-snow nemesis even as Eponine gives her life to save him and the greater cause of the French Revolution. I’d love to see a retelling of Les Mis where being pure and ladylike comes in second to gumption and guts.

(1) Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

Only this time, Fight Club is all girls. And the first rule of fight club is that we’d totally sit around and talk about Fight Club because hot dang, we were on fire last night getting our boxing on. And rule number two would be, of course, fight all you want but steer free of the moneymaker (aka, our faces.)

If you can’t get on board for these retellings, then maybe you’ll be open to my Pride & Prejudice retelling, FALL FOR YOU, about a modern-day Elizabeth in the form of Lizzie, a driven reporter at an all-girl’s boarding school that has just been open to boys (oh dear!) – and one boy in particular is about to make her life very, very difficult.

Fall For You + Book Giveaway

Synopsis (Goodreads): To say Lizzie and Dante are polar opposites is the understatement of the century. He's a snooty Exeter transfer with more money than Google. She's a driven study-a-holic barely keeping up with tuition. It's obvious that Dante thinks he's way too good for Lizzie. And Lizzie knows Dante is a snob with a gift for pushing her buttons.

But things are changing fast this year at the Academy. And when Lizzie's quest to stop those changes blows up in her face, taking her oldest friendship with it, she has nowhere else to turn but to Dante, with his killer blue eyes, his crazy-sexy smile, and his secrets... Secrets Lizzie can't seem to leave alone, no matter how hard she tries...

-----

Let's talk about my love for Cecilia Gray, shall we?

This love I speak of is real. It is almighty. It is so potent it stings my nostrils. And after reading Fall For You...well...I may just love her even more.

Pride and Prejudice is a story that has seen many a YA reincarnation, but there's something special about this story. Cecilia (yes, we're on a first-name basis. Please refer to my aforementioned love) does a really great job of retelling this beloved classic. While much of the story doesn't come as a surprise,  there's an added bit of charm and wit that I couldn't help but connect with.

The novel's protagonist, Lizzie, is a heroine worth cheering for! She's incredibly clever and opinionated, but above all she had a big heart and a good head on her shoulders. And as for the leading man (*fans self*) Dante? Well, pardon while drool unattractively on my keyboard, but he is devastatingly Darcy-ish and I just want to let you know that I've already got dibs. He's MINE and you can't have him!

*runs away with Dante's love*

Seriously though, Fall For You was an incredibly charming novel and I can't wait to see what Cecilia has in store for Book 2 of the Jane Austen Academy series, So Into You (Summer 2012).

On to the good stuff, yes?

Because I loved this book so much, I am giving away an e-book copy to one of YOU lucky readers. I'll make it easy for you...

Here's your secret me book—it's time to celebrate what you're made of

-----

When Sourcebooks contacted me about reviewing a copy of The Secret Me Book, by Rachel Kempster and Meg Leder, I jumped at the chance! I've always been a fan of interactive journals and it just so happened to come at a time when I was doing a bit of soul searching.

Little did I know I would fall head over heels in love with this little book.  The charming and incredibly introspective prompts gave me an opportunity to think about...well...ME. It was done in a way that proved to be way too much fun, as well as hilariously entertaining, so I only had to grab a pen and head straight for the couch with this book.

If you ever get excited at the thought of interactive books and/or journaling (like me), then this book is for you.  Kempster and Leder pose questions you may have never thought about, as well as  prompts that help you reflect on who you are. You'll jot down goals, dreams, likes, dislikes, soul songs, talents, friends and fears. And trust that that's only the beginning...

Not to mention it's the perfect present for a partner, family member, friend, or other loved one. Hey, you can even give it to your enemies so that it serves as a constant reminder of how incredibly awesome you are...and how they can NEVER be like you.

Too much?

In all seriousness though, this book is the perfect opportunity to discover the secret you. Better yet, the REAL you. I honestly can't recommend it enough as I've really enjoyed the introspective journey. Filling out the pages is only the beginning...this is a book that will help you reflect long after you've put it down. And I absolutely LOVE that.

So let's spread that love, right?

Insurgent and Other Nine Letter Words

Synopsis (Goodreads)One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's (sic) initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

-----

[I wanna preface this by saying that this was probably one of THE hardest reviews I have ever written.  It took me a while to figure out how I would piece my thoughts and form (somewhat) cohesive sentences.  This book left me in a flood of emotions so I hope to have done my best and I hope you enjoy it. Also, I hope you'll still love me in the end. Let's do this.

-----

Insurgent by Veronica Roth picks up right where we left off in Divergent. Tris and company are on their way to Amity headquarters where, surprise surprise (NOT), things go from bad to worse.  I'll try not to get TOO spoilery, but guys, if you thought Divergent was a roller-coaster of emotions, please know that it has nothing on Insurgent. This book takes the form adrenaline and becomes a real-life thrill ride.  It became very clear, very early on, that Roth would redraw any established lines and not just cross them. No, that would be too easy. She would catapult right over them.

Friends, catapult she did.

I guess it should go without saying that the main force of this novel was Tris, the novel's protagonist. While I may or may not have wanted to strangle her throughout some rather crucial moments in the novel, I have to say that I absolutely loved how resilient she proved to be. She's a broken girl who builds up incredible armor when it comes to protecting those she loves. It was really great to see her character shine in the face of adversity and...dun, dun, dun...BETRAYAL (OH, THE BETRAYAL!). She's a remarkable character.

And speaking of remarkable characters, let's get to why we're really here, shall we? A certain man-boy named Four (Mr. Tobias if you're nasty). Yes ladies, his sex appeal is still quite potent and while his relationship with Tris most certainly changes and matures throughout the novel, he's still the mysterious and intriguing guy we've all come to lovingly adore, stalk, and obsess over.  Yes, I am guilty of all aforementioned acts.

That being said, and please don't hate me, I didn't love this book as much as I wanted to. Believe me I wanted to. Don't get me wrong, I really liked it, but it just didn't have the same impact as Divergent

While I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, I started to feel like things became just a tad repetitive, especially towards the end of the novel. Not to mention there was a pretty predictable twist in the story, as well as a set of very important questions left unanswered. Not that this is a bad thing, seeing as how we still have the third (and final) installment to look forward to, I just wish things had ended on a clearer note.

Again, I didn't dislike it. I thought Roth did an incredible job of building and expanding this world, I just didn't get the same magical feeling from this novel.

One thing if certain, though. Once this craziness is over, I think Tris needs a vacation. Maybe she and Tobias can can head on up to Milwaukee? Or maybe the Wisconsin Dells? Seriously, the girl needs a break! And a drink (Or FOUR... *wink* See what I did there?)

The REAL kicker, though, is the fact that we have to wait ONE MORE YEAR for the final book in the trilogy. And let me just say that if this whole Mayan prophecy thing comes to fruition, I am going to be really pissed!

Just sayin'!

The Printz Award Challenge of 2012

In case you have absolute no idea what I am referring to...

The Michael L. Printz Award annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit, each year. In addition, the Printz Committee names up to four honor books, which also represent the best writing in young adult literature (ALA).

This year is going to be different.  Instead of plowing aimlessly through my (still) ridiculous stack of unread books, I've decided to challenge myself.

Inspired by a small twist of fate (A very special author event) and my love for a certain Australian writer (No, not you Sarah. Although I love you very much), I decided I would take this year to read every Printz Award winning book. Lucky for my schedule, there are only 12 books on the list which is completely doable. Here they are...

2012: Where Things Come back by John Corey Whaley

2011: Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi

2010: Going Bovine by Libba Bray

2008: The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean

2006: Looking for Alaska by John Green

2005: How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff

2004: The First Part Last by Angela Johnson

2003: Postcards from No Man's Land by Aidan Chambers

2002: A Step From Heaven by An Na

2001: Kit's Wilderness by David Almond

2000: Monster by Walter Dean Myers

*takes deep breath*

I've given myself until December 31st to read them all. I've already read On The Jellicoe Road and Where Things Come Back so, if my mathematical calculations are correct, I only have 10 more books to go.  Not so bad, right?

God speed.

Alas, A Lover's Dictionary

basis, n.

There has to be a moment at the beginning when you wonder whether you’re in love with the person or in love with the feeling of love itself.

If the moment doesn’t pass, that’s it—you’re done. And if the moment does pass, it never goes that far. It stands in the distance, ready for whenever you want it back. Sometimes it’s even there when you thought you were searching for something else, like an escape route, or your lover’s face.

How does one talk about love? Do we even have the right words to describe something that can be both utterly mundane and completely transcendent, pulling us out of our everyday lives and making us feel a part of something greater than ourselves? Taking a unique approach to this problem, the nameless narrator of David Levithan’s The Lover’s Dictionary has constructed the story of his relationship as a dictionary. Through these short entries, he provides an intimate window into the great events and quotidian trifles of being within a couple, giving us an indelible and deeply moving portrait of love in our time. (Goodreads)

-----

I guess I should start with a made-up definition of my own:

Levithanites, n.
Followers of David Levithan.

There. I said it. Judge me if you wish, but know I'll just hide behind my copy of The Lover's Dictionary. For I am a Levithanite. And in the grammatically flawed words of MC Hammer, "U can't touch this."

Now, while not the typical "Kristin pick" (yes, I refer to myself in third person on occasion), I couldn't help but purchase this book after an author event here in New York City. David was there (yes, we're on a first-name basis now), along with a slew of other fabulous and incredibly talented authors. I approached him after the event and I was sold. Instantly.

It's a wonderful thing, you know? When you take a chance on a book.

The Lover's Dictionary is genius in its simplicity. The non-traditional novel, which is told through dictionary entries, unfolds the makings and ends, the comings and goings, of a most off-beat, charming, and outright REAL relationship. And how Levithan managed to pull that off may be one of life's biggest enigmas. Up there along with the death of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. (Too soon? - Well, now that my site's been flagged by the government, I guess there's no turning back). It's safe to say that David captures love in its barest form.

It's kind of hard for me to describe just how wonderfully this novel unfolds, so I'll let the book do some of the talking for me. Still, I am afraid I can't do it justice.

breathtaking, adj.
Those mornings when we kiss and surrender for an hour before we say a single word.

I know, right?!

fluke, n.
The date before the one with you had gone so badly -- egotist, smoker, bad breath -- that I'd vowed to delete my profile the next morning. Except when I went to do it, I realized I only had eight days left in the billing cycle. So I gave it eight days. You emailed me on the sixth.

and then there's...

 neophyte, n.
There are millions upon millions of people who have been through this before -- why is it that no one can give me good advice?

So, if you're looking to experience the throes of lust, the ups and downs of a lover's path, and the magic of falling deeply in love, look no further than The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan.

It's unlike any love story you'll ever read. #fact

Cover Reveal: The Piper's Son (US Paperback Edition)

I don't know if it's because my hormones are out of whack, or because I just had the best ice-cream in the world for lunch, but I got seriously teary when I saw the new US Paperback cover for The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta.  Just looking at it brought back the heartbreak, the joy and the raw emotion I associate with this book.

How incredible is it that a book can do that to you MONTHS after you've put it down?

And despite the countless number of books staring down at me from my shelves, I think The Piper's Son is creeping back into my life for a re-read. I'm telling myself it's cosmic.

I am getting teary now, so I'll leave it at that.

Happy Wednesday :D

SIDE NOTE: I really hope Melina doesn't Google Alert herself because I am beginning to sound like a crazed fan-girl, aren't I? Um...on second though...don't answer that!
